Miscellaneous - The Fossils of Mount Subasio at the Geo-Palaeontology Laboratory 
Assisi (Pg). Easily recognisable as the great mountain that acts as a backdrop to Assisi, Mount Subasio stands as an isolated geological formation when compared to the other surrounding phenomena. Its current shape is the result of millions of years of endogenous and exogenous phenomena, while its actual composition is prevalently of calcareous carbonate marine sediments. The endogenous phenomena deformed the strata of sediments that had deposited over a former sea bed dating from between the Mesozoic (210 million years ago) and the Miocene (roughly 10 million years ago), while the exogenous phenomena were responsible for modelling the surface of the relief, creating the morphology we see today and that many have mistakenly interpreted as being the result of a volcanic eruption.The many fossil remains that have been unearthed all over Mount Subasio are kept and on public display at the Laboratorio ecologico di Geo-Paleontologia, which is located in the headquarters of the Parco del Monte Subasio. The laboratory houses a permanent exhibition of geology and palaeontology articulated in three different sections – the formation of fossils, Mount Subasio and the fossils unearthed in its surroundings and a comparison between the Jurassic Age in Umbria with the same period in the rest of Europe. A separate didactic section offers instructive fun for parents and children alike,with games focussing on fossils and a chance to make your own fossil shapes. Consult the full teaching programme.
